Making this costume: I really wanted to make a
'Pirates' costume since 'Curse of the Black Pearl' came out. My
favorite costume out of all of Elizabeth's thus far, is her Plum
Pirate gown, given to her by Captain Barbossa. This gown turned
out to be quite the under taking.
I
searched high and low for a decent plum-colored silk dupioni. I
really wanted to make a costume with the correct fabrics and in
a close enough color. I ended up going with Silk
Baron's "Juicy Plum". I ordered 9 yards of it, and I highly
reccommend them. They're service is great, and their swatches are
free. You can ask for up to 3 at a time, and they give discounts
frequently, as well as Ebay sales. This color was perfect. In most
lights it is a wine/burgandy red, seen in many of the Elizabeth
promo shots. In other lights its a dead on match from the plum color
seen on the film. I love it. The plum over gown is lined in black
floral lace. The flared cream sleeve ends are linen and lace. The
bodice, and sleeve gold trim was hand sewn, as were the frogs, accents
and buttons. For the black pieces that go under the frogs, I used
black elastic. The gold and black trims down the front of the skirt
was machine sewn on. The bodice closes with hook and eyes.
The
black underdress is seperate, but attatched to the Plum over dress
in several parts. It has boning in the bodice, to give the dress
a better shape. The neckline is edged in black lace trim.
The
'Rum Island Shift', was made out of creame crinkled linen, and the
neckline and arms were trimed in a small white lace, lightly tea
dyed. The front is open to nearly mid-waist, and is tied. The arms
are split almost all the way up and are tied as well with off-white
cord.
These are the shoes I bought to go with the costume. I'm now searching for fancier buckles to replace the plain ones that came with these shoes. Add a pair of creame colored stockings, an Aztec cursed gold coin, and this gown is complete!
I'm
currently working on getting set up shots of this gown and the shift
taken. They'll be up as soon as I can have them taken!
